If you love sweet potato pie but want to make it more distinctive and less like pumpkin pie, here are a few ideas for inspiration.
Roast the potatoes
For an extra rich, slightly smoky flavor, roast the potatoes first.
Use a different type of crust
Instead of a traditional pie crust, make a gingersnap or even a graham crust. Maybe even add some finely chopped pecans or hazelnuts to it as well. For a little extra texture, save some of the crumb crust to sprinkle over the top as well.
Sweeten the deal
Brown sugar, maple syrup, honey or sweetened condensed milk would be flavorful substitutions for granulated sugar.
Add a little spirit
Rum, bourbon, Frangelico, cognac or other favorite liqueur would add another layer of flavor to those sweet potatoes!
Zest of life
Citrus zest, especially orange would add a bright, almost floral note.
Spice it up!
Instead the standard, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and cloves, consider adding Chinese five spice, mace, cardamom, cayenne, curry or even saffron or rosemary for more of a savory touch.
